The catalog does not have to reside on the Backup Server machine, but it often does.
Media Server— A media server is any machine in the Storage Domain to which a backup device
is attached. Any machine in the Storage Domain can act as a media server. Also, there can be
multiple media servers in a Storage Domain. Any machine in the Storage Domain can back up
to any media server in the same Storage Domain. That is, the media server allows its attached
backup devices to be shared by all the machines in the same Storage Domain.
Clients— A client is any computer in the Storage Domain other than the Backup Server. This
includes file servers, application servers, and user PCs (desktops and laptops). All client
computers must have a copy of Data Protector Express installed on them.
Backup devices— A backup device is any device to which backed up files can be copied. This
includes tape drives, tape libraries, hard disks (as virtual tape libraries), Network Attached
Storage (NAS) appliances, and CD or DVD recordable devices. Backup devices are attached to
media servers.
Media— Backed up files are written to media. Different media have different characteristics for
capacity, durabiilty, and portability which should be considered when choosing what media to
backup to. Media can be a physical tape or CD or a virtual "tape" in a virtual tape library on a
disk drive. Also, for reliable backup, you should rotate (alternate) your backups among a set of
multiple media (such as tapes). The type of media rotation you select is based on how often you
want to back up your data, how long you want to retain the data, and the number of media you
want to use. For more information, see
