  • Page 6 Navigating HP Data Protector Express Software Quick Access Control (Windows only) The Quick Access Control application is automatically installed on Windows systems when you select the Quick or Recommended installation, and it is selected by default in a Custom installation. This application provides simplified access to the primary features of HP Data Protector Express Software.
  • Page 7 Disk backup and restore Disk-to-disk (D2D) Backup HP Data Protector Express Software enables disk-to-disk (D2D) backups through the creation of virtual libraries as backup targets. A virtual library emulates the operation of a physical tape library, and all the features available in HP Data Protector Express Software to support backup to physical tape libraries are supported for virtual libraries.
  • Page 8 Create a virtual library 4. At the Welcome prompt give the virtual library a name, such as “My First Virtual Library”. By default the Machine hosting the Virtual Library is the local machine. Other machines can host the Virtual Library when multiple machines are in the Data Protector Express Storage Domain. We will accept the default of the local machine.
  • Page 9 Disk backup and restore When the location is selected, set Specify size (in GB) for storage to 18 (or appropriate value for your backup jobs). This is the maximum and licensed capacity of the storage folder. There is a maximum capacity of 36 GB for HP Data Protector Express Software Single Server Edition and a maximum capacity of 8 TB for HP Data Protector Express Software.
  • Page 10 Create a virtual library 9. Now you are ready to create your backup job. Click Finish to exit the Create Virtual Library wizard. A window confirms that the Virtual Library was created: 10. Click OK. To see the Virtual Library just created, click on Devices in the Favorites desk bar and navigate down from the Network folder to see “My First Virtual Library”.
  • Page 11 Disk backup and restore Create a disk backup job This is the same process as the tape backup described in Tutorial 2. The difference is that the Virtual Library, just configured, is the target device for the backup. 1. Run HP Data Protector Express Software and log in. 2.
  • Page 12 Create a disk backup job Check the box to select the files and folders to be backed up. By checking the Important Files folder, we are selecting all its sub-folders and the files in them. TIP: Look at the Tasks and Information pane. Note how the Steps section shows all the steps in this wizard and highlights your current position.
  • Page 13 Disk backup and restore 8. Click on the + to the left of VLD Devices to display all available virtual libraries. Select the virtual library (the box is filled in). Devices to be used now contains only the virtual library. NOTE: Once you have used a device in a backup job, that device will appear in the Devices list for future jobs, even if it is no longer online.
  • Page 14 Create a disk backup job In the Encryption settings, select Off. If your business requires you to use encryption, this screen allows you to set the required encryption types and levels. See “How do I enable encryption?” in Tutorial 5. This option should be used with care.

If you have installed the Quick Access Control, hold the cursor over the HP Data Protector Express Software icon in the Windows System tray, normally in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
  • Page 16 Create a disk backup job 16. For more detailed information, click on Status in the Commands pane. 17. Watch the backup job until completion. 18. Click OK to close the Status dialogue of your backup job. NOTE: You can also view job status by clicking Job Status in the Favorites desk bar, selecting the name of your first backup job and look at the Details pane.
  • Page 17 Disk backup and restore 19. It is also good practice to check the logs and ensure that there were no problems. Click Recent Logs in the Favorites desk bar. The most recently-run job is at the top of the list, but you can sort on any column.
  • Page 18 Create a disk backup job Subsequent backups Once you have created your backup (or any) job, it can be quickly and easily located again in your Home folder. Before you start the job, be sure all files to be included in the backup are closed. Then select the job and either right-click and select Run from the drop-down menu or click Run in the Commands pane.
  • Page 19 Disk backup and restore Restore from disk The following steps will enable you to carry out your first, simple restore to disk. 1. Run HP Data Protector Express Software and log in. 2. Select Wizards in the Favorites desk bar and Restore in the Detail Area. 3.
  • Page 20 Restore from disk Check the box to select the files/folders to be restored. By checking the Important Files folder, we are selecting all its sub-folders and the files in them. 6. For this first restore, we want to restore the files to a different location. This will allow you to compare the original files with the restored files.
  • Page 21 Disk backup and restore 8. Select the new folder as the destination for the move operation and click OK. 9. Your new folder is now visible under the C: drive. Expand the folder to see how the files will be visible after restore is finished.

You can click on any of the column headings to sort the list according to the column criterion.
