Storage Domain— A Storage Domain is a collection of computers and backup devices that is
managed together as a group. A Storage Domain can encompass an entire company or each
department could be a separate domain, even though they are all on the same network. All
resources in a Storage Domain can be accessed by all members of the Storage Domain and
centrally managed from a single Data Protector Express interface.
NOTE:
A Storage Domain is completely independent of any Windows Active Directory domain.
Each file server, application server, user PC, and attached peripherals such as backup devices
can be the member of one and only one Storage Domain.
Backup media created in one Storage Domain cannot be used in another Storage Domain without
following special procedures (for example, importing media created on one Storage Domain into
another Storage Domain). This ensures that there is no improper access to backup data.
Each Storage Domain must have at least one backup device, such as a tape device, tape library,
virtual library, or CD device. This backup device can belong to only one Storage Domain; it
cannot be shared among multiple domains. However, a Storage Domain could have multiple
backup devices.
Computers and backup devices are members of a Storage Domain. Users are not members of
a Storage Domain. For example, when a user works on a PC, their work is backed up within
the Storage Domain to which that PC is a member. If this same user also works on a second
PC in a different Storage Domain, the work on the second PC will be backed up within the
Storage Domain to which the second PC is assigned. That is, the backup is associated with
the PC, not with the user.
Data Protector Express administrators can administer more than one Storage Domain from a
single computer. However, the Data Protector Express interface cannot manage more than one
Storage Domain at the same time. The administrator has to log off of one Storage Domain
and log into another.
Backup Server— Each Storage Domain has one and only one Backup Server. The Backup Server
is responsible for coordinating the backup activities of all other machines in the Storage Domain.
All license information is also contained on the Backup Server.
Catalog— A catalog is a special-purpose database that contains all the information about a
Storage Domain. There is one and only one catalog for each Storage Domain. The catalog
contains the following information ...
• machines in the Storage Domain
