Router
A machine in a large network that reads the destination of a message and
selects the best route for transporting the packet. Operates in the network layer
of the OSI Model.
Routing
The means whereby a router knows where to forward a packet. There are two
ways to do this. Static routing requires a predefined routing table be entered.
Dynamic routing builds the routing table dynamically, without end user
intervention. Dynamic routing is preferable, but requires more intelligence in
the router.
Routing Protocol
Any set of algorithms designed to route data. There are several architecture
structures of how routers are set up to support networks, however they must all
know where to route data that is bound for a destination. Protocols can be
based on dynamic and static inputs. Dynamic routing configurations allow
routers to communicate and learn destinations from each other and thus enable
the best path for data transfer and load balancing. Static routing configurations
are routes that are input by an administrator. The routes are set in a "fixed"
way that data will always be handled the same way.
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
The leading security protocol on the Internet. When an SSL session is started,
the browser sends its public key to the server so that the server can securely
send a secret key to the browser. The browser and server exchange data via
secret key encryption during that session. Developed by Netscape, SSL has
been merged with other protocols and authentication methods into a new
protocol known as Transport Layer Security (TLS).
Server
Computer on a LAN where the network software runs. Servers provide file,
print and/or communication, and application (email) services for the network.
A webserver is the computer program within the computer that serves
requested HTML pages or files.
