Network Architectures
Master plans to support the development of advanced data communications
networks and the standards for those networks.
Network Interface Controller (NIC)
A hardware controller that acts as a physical connection between the end user's
workstation and the communications medium, facilitating the use of the
network software. NICs may be present in intelligent printers, like those from
Compaq, or in other computer devices (such as routers, bridges, and
mainframes).
Network Time Protocol (NTP)
A protocol that can be used by devices connected to the Internet to
synchronize their time with a reference time source. This time is usually
accurate within a few milliseconds.
NIC
See Network Interface Controller.
Node
Any computer, terminal, or communications device on a network. Each node
has a unique IP address.
Octet
A data communication term that represents 8 bits or 1 byte.
Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)
A model, developed by ISO, that divides the architectural design of a network
into seven hierarchical layers. See also ISO/OSI.
