2 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide
Bit
A unit of division used to associate messages to machine language. A bit could
be associated with the letters of the alphabet. It takes several letters to create a
word. The collection of eight bits makes a byte. The difference is that bytes are
always the same size and there are only two states for bit, high or low.
Bits Per Second (Bps)
A measurement of data transmission speed. Because several bits can fit into a
baud, it is greater or equal to the baud rate. Also annotated as b/s.
BOOTP
See Bootstrap Protocol.
Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP)
An Internet protocol that can provide network configuration information to
diskless or other workstations as necessary. The boot information usually
includes the IP address that the workstation uses, the IP address of the server,
the host name of the server, and the IP address where other startup instructions
can be found.
Bps
See Bits Per Second.
BRI
See Basic Rate Interface.
Byte
A set of eight bits that comprise a word that is used by machine language. The
information in this form is usable in digital circuitry and transistor-transistor
logic.
Carrier Sense, Multiple Access (CSMA)
A contention access method that allows multiple workstations on the baseband
network to share a single channel. Each workstation can sense activity on the
network and waits to transmit when the channel is quiet.
