Domain Name System (DNS)
A domain name system translates Internet domain names to IP addresses.
Alphabetic domain names are easier to remember (such as )
www.compaq.com
than the strings of numbers that make up IP addresses. However, the Internet
is based on IP addresses. When a browser is pointed to a domain name, a DNS
must translate the name into the corresponding IP address.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
A system designed to help reduce configuration time for TCP/IP networks by
automatically assigning IP addresses to clients when they log on.
Ethernet
A standard adopted by the IEEE as 802.3 that allows a physical connection
between computers, using coaxial cable to connect systems.
Fault Tolerance
The ability to continue nonstop when a hardware failure occurs. A fault
tolerant system is designed from the ground up for reliability by building
multiples of all critical components, such as CPUs, memories, disks, and
power supplies into the same computer. In the event that one component fails,
another one takes over without skipping a beat.
File Transfer (FT)
The movement of a complete set of data from one computer to another.
Firewall
A security mechanism that prevents unauthorized data traffic between
networks.
Frequency
The number of cycles per second at which an analog signal occurs, usually
expressed in Hertz (Hz).
