Internet without needing to remember the specific IP address of websites that they want to visit or access. For example, an administrator wants to access the Compaq main website. The IP address for the website is 161.114.1.225. If not for the DNS, the administrator would have to retype the IP address for that website every time he or she wanted to visit that website.
Appendix Electrostatic Discharge To prevent damaging the system, be aware of the precautions that you need to follow when setting up the system or handling parts. A discharge of static electricity from a finger or other conductor can damage system boards or other static-sensitive devices.
C-2 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide Grounding Methods There are several methods for grounding. Use one or more of the following methods when handling or installing electrostatic-sensitive parts: Use a wrist strap connected by a ground cord to a grounded (earthed) workstation or computer chassis.
Glossary Application Layer See International Standards Organization Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection. Asynchronous A transmission scheme that uses start/stop bits to define a character and separate it from other characters. Each character is sent to the central processor as it is typed. Authentication The process through which the system validates user logon information.

2 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide A unit of division used to associate messages to machine language. A bit could be associated with the letters of the alphabet. It takes several letters to create a word. The collection of eight bits makes a byte. The difference is that bytes are always the same size and there are only two states for bit, high or low.

A workstation on a local area network (LAN) that utilizes the services of any type of server in the network. Compaq Insight Manager A Windows-based application to monitor servers on the network. It operates in band and can monitor an unlimited number of servers.

4 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide See Domain Name System. Domain Name System (DNS) A domain name system translates Internet domain names to IP addresses. Alphabetic domain names are easier to remember (such as www.compaq.com than the strings of numbers that make up IP addresses. However, the Internet is based on IP addresses.

Glossary 5 See File Transfer. Gateway A device that allows hosts in a local subnet to communicate with other subnets. One function of a router is to act as a gateway. Graphic User Interface (GUI) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates icons, pull-down menus, and a mouse.

6 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide IEEE See Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) One of the primary professional organizations involved in the development of international standards for local area networks (LANs). The IEEE 802 committee standards deal with physical and data link layers of the ISO/OSI Reference Model.
Page 121
Glossary 7 International Standards Organization Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection (ISO/OSI) An architectural model developed by the ISO for the design of an open systems network. This model divides the complex problem of communications into several simpler functions or layers and defines standards for each of the layers.

8 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide IP Address The Internet protocol address that the domain name server translates into a domain name. The format of an IP address is four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be 0 to 255; for example: 1.150.12.130.
Page 123
Glossary 9 Local Area Network (LAN) A collection of many microcomputers in one area connected with cable, and usually equipped with some peripherals that the computers share. The basic components of a LAN are network interface controllers (NICs) that go into every device to connect and communicate network software.
Page 124
A hardware controller that acts as a physical connection between the end user's workstation and the communications medium, facilitating the use of the network software. NICs may be present in intelligent printers, like those from Compaq, or in other computer devices (such as routers, bridges, and mainframes). Network Time Protocol (NTP) A protocol that can be used by devices connected to the Internet to synchronize their time with a reference time source.
Page 125
Glossary 11 Ping A utility used to determine whether a network destination is online by sending an echo request and waiting for a response. Port The point at which devices can be connected to computers or networks for transmitting or receiving data. Port Number A 16-bit number local to the client that is used by TCP/IP.
Page 126
12 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide Router A machine in a large network that reads the destination of a message and selects the best route for transporting the packet. Operates in the network layer of the OSI Model.
Page 127
Glossary 13 Session Layer See International Standards Organization Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) A standard network management protocol developed for the TCP/IP Internet, designed for communications between agents and managers running on diverse platforms. SNMP See Simple Network Management Protocol.
Page 128
14 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide TCP/IP See Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. Telnet A network terminal protocol employed with TCP/IP that allows computer users to log on to other computers in the same network or remote network. Topology The physical picture of how the wires or cables are laid out in local area networks (LANs).
Page 129
Glossary 15 Wide Area Network (WAN) Any network that covers a large geographic area (50 miles or more) and may include packet switching, public data networks, and value-added networks. (WANs) can be characterized by their large size (in comparison to local area network [LAN]), relatively low bandwidth, and high degree of fault tolerance.
