Local Area Network (LAN)
A collection of many microcomputers in one area connected with cable, and
usually equipped with some peripherals that the computers share. The basic
components of a LAN are network interface controllers (NICs) that go into
every device to connect and communicate network software.
MAC
See Media Access Control.
Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP)
A communications protocol introduced by General Motors in 1982. MAP
provides common standards for interconnecting computers and programmable
machine tools used in factory automation. At the lowest physical level, it uses
the IEEE 802.4 token bus protocol.

Mask

Media
The physical method of transferring data in a network. Examples include
twisted pair, coaxial, and optical fiber. Also called medium.
Media Access Control (MAC)
The lower sublayer of the OSI data link layer.

Network
A system of interconnected computing devices that can communicate and
share resources.
