Table 4: EU Directives Applicable to Drives
EU Directive
Description
Low Volt-
The aim of the Low Voltage Directive is to protect persons, domestic animals, and property against dangers

caused by the electrical equipment, when operating electrical equipment that is installed and maintained cor-
(2014/35/EU)
rectly, in its intended application. The directive applies to all electrical equipment in the 50–1000 V AC and the 75–
1500 V DC voltage ranges.
EMC Directive
The purpose of the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) Directive is to reduce electromagnetic interference and
(2014/30/EU)
enhance immunity of electrical equipment and installations. The basic protection requirement of the EMC Direc-
tive states that devices that generate electromagnetic interference (EMI), or whose operation could be affected by
EMI, must be designed to limit the generation of electromagnetic interference and shall have a suitable degree of
immunity to EMI when properly installed, maintained, and used as intended.
Electrical equipment devices used alone or as part of a system must bear the CE mark. Systems do not require the
CE mark, but must comply with the basic protection requirements of the EMC Directive.
ErP Directive
The ErP Directive is the European Ecodesign Directive for energy-related products. The directive sets ecodesign re-
(2009/125/EC)
quirements for energy-related products, including drives, and aims at reducing the energy consumption and envi-
ronmental impact of products by establishing minimum energy-efficiency standards.
RoHS Directive
The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive is an EU directive that restricts the use of hazardous ma-
(2011/65/EU)
terials in the manufacturing of electronic and electrical products. Read more on www.danfoss.com.
Waste Electri-
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) sets collection, recycling and recovery
cal and Elec-
targets for all types of electrical goods.

Standards

2.2
Installation must be in accordance with national regulations, for example NEC NFPA 70, or IEC 60364 series of standards.
The following standards are recommended as guidelines for the installation and operation of drives:
EN IEC 61800-2: 2021 Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems - Part 2: General requirements - Rating specifications for
l
low voltage adjustable speed AC power drive systems.
EN IEC 61800-3: 2018 Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems - Part 3: EMC requirements and specific test methods.
l
EN IEC 61800-5-1: 2021 Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems - Part 5-1: Safety requirements - Electrical, thermal, and
l
energy.
EN IEC 61800-9-2: 2023 Adjustable speed electrical power drive systems - Part 9-2: Ecodesign for power drive systems, motor
l
starters, power electronics and their driven applications - Energy efficiency indicators for power drive systems and motor starters.
EN IEC UL 60335-2-40: 2022 Household and similar electrical appliances - Part 2-40: Particular requirements for electrical heat
l
pumps, air-conditioners and dehumidifiers - Annex JJ, Allowable opening of relays and similar components to prevent ignition of
A2L refrigerants.
