4.2.2. Packing for sea transportation

4.2.2.1. Wood box

A reusable wood box with the correct packing symbols is required for sea transportation.

4.2.2.2. Band strapping

– The band strapping shall be applied 8 folded.
– Minimum tensile strength of 50 kg/mm
– Use edge protectors at the top of the cabinets.

4.2.2.3. Foil barrier material

Depending on the requested protection period there two barrier material systems can be
applied:
– PE (polyethylene film with 0.2 mm thickness or 0.12 mm if it fulfills the same
specification)
– Aluminum barrier film (for long-time storage; 3 layers, with the aluminum sheet in the
middle layer used as a 100% steam barrier).
Sharp corners of the cabinet and the inside packaging have to be cushioned to avoid
damage to the film (penetration), resulting in a loss of the vacuum protective atmosphere.
Desiccants according to DIN 55474, shall be distributed inside the packed device.

4.2.2.4. Humidity indicator

If desiccant with a barrier film is used for packaging, ABB recommends using a humidity
indicator for a storage period of more than 12 months.
The indicator shows the relative humidity on the inside of the barrier film packaging and
can be checked at any time of the transportation and storage process through an
inspection hole.
Depending on the discoloration the indication on the humidity shows the required
measures to taken to ensure an ongoing corrosion protection. Since the accuracy depends
on temperature, the application of a corrective table might be necessary.
IMPORTANT! The indicator must not be placed close to the desiccant. If a humidity
indicator is required, an inspection hole must be made in the packaging.
