6.4.1.1. Recommended cable types

In order to insure compliance with EMC requirements and to provide a defined, low-
impedance, high-frequency path for common-mode currents, a shielded cable is
mandatory. The shield also protects the cable mechanically and in respect of partial
discharge in case of non-optimal cable laying.
The type of cable must fulfill the specification according IEC 60228 cl. 5, with a nominal
voltage range of 6 / 10 kV.

6.4.1.2. Power Cable Dimensions

Cables are chosen according to the converter nominal current.
The current carrying capacity of cables is defined for sinusoidal waveforms.
For operation with non-sinusoidal waveforms, the current carrying capacity is reduced by
the rating factor. The rating factor covers only converter operation.
The ampacity rating of the cable shall consider derating factors of the cable in accordance
with maximum expected ambient temperature, and any other factors required by local
electrical codes. Installation shall be in compliance with standard industrial practice for
medium voltage equipment.
Voltage rise across the insulation phase / shield of up to 3.0 kV/μs has to be considered.
In order to determine the exact dimensions for a specific project, the actual situation
(method of installation, voltage drop due to cable length etc.) and local regulations must be
considered.
Refer also to the specifications supplied by the power cable manufacturer.
