4.
Place a floor jack under the transaxle differential casing to support (but not lift) the drivetrain. Raise it just enough
to relieve tension on the shock absorbers without compressing them.
5.
Remove the tire and wheel assembly on the side from which the spring is to be removed. Thread one lug nut
onto a stud on the rear hub. This will keep the brake drum on the hub.
6.
Remove lower nut (1), cup washer (9), and rubber bushing (8) from shock absorber (10) (Figure 9-5, Page 9-4).
7.
Remove the lock nuts (12) and flat washers (if present) attaching the U-bolt (15) to the shock mount bracket (6).
Remove jounce bumper mount (17) and spacer (11).
8.
Allow shock mount bracket (6) to rotate downward and remove spring retainer (13). Do not disconnect brake
cable from bracket (Figure 9-5, Page 9-4).
9.
Raise axle with floor jack until axle tube saddle is 1 inch (2.5 cm) above spring.
10.
Remove bolt (22) and lock nut (18) attaching the leaf spring (20) to the rear shackles (23) (Figure 9-5, Page 9-4).
11.
Allow rear of leaf spring (20) to rest on the ground and remove the bolt (22) and lock nut (18) attaching the front of
the spring to the vehicle frame (Figure 9-5, Page 9-4). Remove spring from vehicle.
12.
Inspect the rubber bushings and steel sleeves in the spring eyes and replace if worn or damaged (Figure 9-5,
Page 9-4).
