Network engineering

The System Manager handles the following:
The Network Element Daemon (NED) is a key component of the new
System Manager. NED monitors the Network Elements on a server. It is
also used for software deployment.
At the network level, the network-level configuration data is introduced.
This data is shared information and is not specific to any particular network
element.
Multiple FPMs permit increased scalability of the system. Each FPM is
configured to monitor the alarms and logs from a specific set of Network
Elements. The FPM does not need to be collocated with the NE it monitors.
Each FPM can be configured to report the alarms to an external Operations
Support System (OSS).
Multiple AMs permit increased scalability of the system. Each AM is
configured to support the accounting information from a specific set of NEs.
The AM does not need to be collocated with the NE it monitors. Each AM
can be configured to send the accounting records for an external OSS.
All communication between the NEs, FPMs, AMs, and OSS are encrypted
using SSL.

Alarms and logs

Each FPM formats raw alarm and log data, stores the formatted data on the
disk, and forwards the log information to the OSS.
FPMs are not fault-tolerant. If an FPM fails, the NE will write the
unformatted logs to the local disk, so that information is not lost. When
the communication is restored, the unformatted logs are sent to the FPM.
If the local disk fills up before communication is restored, the most recent
logs are lost.
