system configuration. One system is the active system, and handles traffic in
the normal fashion. The second system is the standby system. The standby
system is configured with the same data (only the system IP addresses
differ). If the active system fails, the Layer 3 switch (the Nortel Application
Switch) detects that the active system has failed. It tells the second system
to become the active system. The second system takes over the traffic.

Layer 3 redundancy
The active and standby MCS systems can be nonredundant systems.
However, for increased reliability, both systems should be fully-redundant
systems.
This feature requires Nortel Application Switches (NAS) in the network.
