New features This chapter describes the new features introduced in Nortel Multimedia Communication Server (MCS) 5100 Release 4.0. The following features are new for MCS 5100 Release 4.0. • "Base Operations, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning supportability" (page 19) • "BCP OM enhancements" (page 19) •...
Base Operations, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning supportability This feature enhances the support and hardware configuration of MCS 5100. The feature includes: • shared network data • consolidated configuration data • consolidated software to reduce memory requirements • ability to configure additional Accounting Managers (AM) and Fault and...
Border Control Point (formerly known as the RTP Media Portal) software and introduces an N+1 (N active and one standby server) fault tolerance strategy. MCS 5100 Release 4.0 does not support the Motorola CPX8216-T version of the Border Control Point.
In the case of failure, all users from the active system are redirected to the second system by the Layer 3 switch. Geographic redundancy is achieved using Nortel Application Switches and DNS Servers, and requires two separate MCS systems. The systems require synchronization on a regular basis.
For more information, see Language support This feature provides the ability for MCS 5100 clients to support multiple languages. The clients include the Multimedia PC Client, Multimedia Web Client, Personal Agent, IP Phone 2002, IP Phone 2004, IP Phone 2007, and MAS conferencing announcements.
MCS and MAS. For more information, see MAS Radvision support This feature covers internal changes to the MCS 5100 software and is related to the Radvision (RV) Stack Integration feature. The feature is internal to the MCS and has no document impacts.
Multimedia Client updates These updates are part of an MCS 5100 Release 3.5 Maintenance Release. The updates are documented for the first time in MCS 5100 Release 4.0. These updates affect the Multimedia PC Client and the Multimedia Office Client user interfaces.
26 New features For more information, see Multimedia Web Client evolution This feature replaces the MCS 5100 Release 3.5 Multimedia Web Client with a Web interface version of the Multimedia PC Client. The MCS no longer requires the Web Client Manager.
PC Client API The Multimedia PC Client Application Programming Interface (PCCAPI) enables a third-party application to invoke MCS 5100 Client services such as basic calls, messaging and presence. The PCCAPI supports the interaction between the Nortel SIP Client and customer-developed applications.
The feature is internal to the MCS and has no document impacts. RFC2833 support This feature supports the RFC2833 standard for digit relay. The MCS 5100 supports the mandatory portions of the RFC2833 standard, which relates to the Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) signals 0-15.
MCS Trunking Gateway Audiocodes Gateway Changes since MCS 5100 Release 3.5 GA The following were added to the MCS 5100 Release 3.5 solution after the product went to General Availability (GA) in 2005. • Multimedia Office Client: a Microsoft Outlook plug-in, which provides the features of the Multimedia PC Client within Microsoft Outlook •...

The second system is the standby system. The standby system is configured with the same data (only the system IP addresses differ). If the active system fails, the Layer 3 switch (the Nortel Application Switch) detects that the active system has failed. It tells the second system to become the active system.
MCS 5100, must be upgraded to the minimum requirements before they can be upgraded to MCS 5100 Release 4.0. All the relevant data is copied from the MCS 5100 Release 3.x system and transferred to the MCS 5100 Release 4.0 system. Any necessary data changes (for example, database schema upgrades) are automated as much as possible to ensure data integrity.
(EOL). The x336 and x335 servers are still supported for the MAS platform. BCT for MAS MCS 5100 Release 4.0 introduces the IBM BladeCenter T (BCT) chassis to support the Media Application Server (MAS). The chassis meets NEBS-3-ETSI standards for electromagnetic compatibility, thermal robustness, fire resistance, earthquake and office vibration resistance, and...
first-hop switch or router. Existing system upgrades MAS systems can be upgraded from MAS Release 3.0 (part of MCS 5100 Release 3.x). Systems running older versions of MAS must be upgraded to MAS Release 3.0 before upgrading to MCS 5100 Release 4.0.
