146 Driving and parking
Use the braking power of the engine when
R
driving downhill.
Shift to a lower gear on uphill gradients and on
R
long, steep downhill gradients.
Check-list after driving off-road
Driving off-road places greater demands on your
vehicle than driving on normal roads. Check the
entire vehicle for damage and foreign bodies
every time after driving off-road. Foreign bodies in
the wheels or drivetrain can lead to imbalances
and thus cause vibrations.
Shift the transfer case to the on-road position
R
HIGH RANGE.
Disengage the differential locks.
R
After fording, apply the brakes to dry them.
R
Check that the service brake is working nor-
R
mally after a long downhill stretch.
Clean the following components every time
R
after driving off-road:
licence plate number
-
headlamps and tail lamps
-
tyres, wheels and wheel arches
-
underbody
-
After driving through sand, mud, water or
R
gravel, have the following components
checked and cleaned:
brake disks and brake pads
-
tyres and wheels
-
axle joints
-
radiator
-
alternator
-
belt drive
-
ECO start/stop function
▌ECO start/stop function

The ECO start/stop function is not available
in all drive programs, depending on the
engine. Observe the status display on the
instrument display concerning this.
If all vehicle conditions for an automatic engine
stop are met, the engine will be switched off auto-
matically:
You brake the vehicle to a standstill in trans-
R
mission position h or i.
You activate the HOLD function or engage
R
transmission position j.

If the system detects an intelligent stop inhibi-
tor, e.g. a stop sign, the engine will not stop.
If you activate the HOLD function or engage
the park position j, the engine can be
switched off in spite of an intelligent stop
inhibitor.

In transmission position k, the engine will
not be switched off automatically even when
the HOLD function is switched on.
The engine will restart automatically in the follow-
ing cases:
You engage transmission position h or k.
R
You depress the accelerator pedal.
R
The vehicle requires an automatic engine
R
start.
Status display on the instrument display:
The è symbol (green) appears when the
R
vehicle is at a standstill: the engine was
switched off by the ECO start/stop function.
