Do not drive on unknown terrain that is not
R
easily visible and stay on marked paths.
Always keep the doors and windows closed
R
while the vehicle is in motion.
Deactivate Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC,
R
cruise control and the variable limiter.
Adapt your driving style to the terrain.
R
Do not use the HOLD function on steep down-
R
hill or uphill gradients with slippery or loose
surfaces.
Driving on sand
When driving on sand, also observe the following
instructions:
Switch to the Desert driving mode (its availa-
R
bility depends on country) (
Shift to a lower gear.
R
Drive quickly to overcome the rolling resist-
R
ance; the vehicle may otherwise dig itself in.
Drive in the tracks of other vehicles if possi-
R
ble. Make sure that the following prerequisites
are met:
the tyre ruts are not too deep.

the sand is firm enough.
-
there is sufficient ground clearance.

Lower the tyre pressure in all four wheels.
R
Contrary to the information on the tyre pres-
sure table (fuel filler flap), you can lower the
tyre pressure to 120 kPa (1.2 bar/17.4 psi).
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: observe the notes in
the Supplement. You could otherwise fail to
recognise dangers.

When no longer driving on sand, immediately
increase the tyre pressure again.
Information on the recommended tyre pres-
sure for the vehicle's factory-fitted tyres can
be found on the tyre pressure table on the
inside of the fuel filler flap (
page 150).

Fording
Also observe the following information when ford-
ing:
Drive no faster than 10 km/h.

Observe the maximum permissible fording
R
depth (

Before driving through water, shift the transfer

case to the LOW RANGE off-road gear
(
page 157).

Switch off automatic climate control

Vehicles with auxiliary heater/ventilation:

switch the auxiliary heater/ventilation off

Ensure that a bow wave does not form as you

drive.
Do not stop in the water and do not switch off

the engine. Ensure the ECO start/stop func-
tion is switched off (

Driving in mountainous terrain
Also observe the following information when driv-
ing in mountainous terrain:
Observe the values of the approach/depar-

ture angle and the maximum gradeabil-
ity(

Engage the differential locks if necessary

Avoid high engine speeds.
