Using Nextel Direct Connect™

Before you begin

Nextel Direct Connect is a digital two-way radio feature that enables you to
communicate with your contacts instantly. Your handheld offers a variety of
advanced Nextel Direct Connect capabilities. You can place Private Calls, Call
Alerts, and Group Calls. You must know your contact's Nextel Direct Connect
Number to place Nextel Direct Connect calls.
Note: Refer to "Phone" on page 119 for information on aspects of the Phone application
that also apply to Nextel Direct Connect, such as phone icons, using shortcuts when you
place calls, setting the volume, customizing phone options, and viewing phone status.

Using the Push-to-Talk
During a Nextel Direct Connect call, press and hold the Push-to-Talk (PTT)
button to speak to your contact. When you press the PTT button, the handheld
beeps to indicate that you are the current speaker. Release the PTT button to listen
to your contact. When you release the PTT button, your contact's handheld beeps
to indicate that you are finished speaking.
Note: You can customize how your handheld notifies you of Direct Connect calls and
whether your handheld beeps to indicate the current speaker. Refer to "Customizing
notification profiles" on page 220 for more information.

Placing Nextel Direct Connect calls

You can place Nextel Direct Connect Private Calls, Call Alerts, and Group Calls if,
in the handheld status section of the screen, NXTL, NXTl, NXtl, or nXtl and one
or more bars appear with the wireless coverage indicator.
Placing one-time Nextel Direct Connect Calls
You can place Nextel Direct Connect Private Calls, Call Alerts, and Group Calls
without adding the contact or talkgroup to your handheld's Address Book.
To place a one-time Nextel Direct Connect Private Call
1. On the Home screen, click the Phone icon. The Phone screen appears.
