5.2.2

AXLE BEARING CLEARANCE CONTROL

Preparatory activities
Hitch trailer to tractor, immobilize the tractor with parking brake.
Place the tractor and the trailer on firm and level ground.
Place blocking chocks under trailer wheel which will not be lifted. Ensure that
the trailer will not roll away during inspection.
Raise the wheel (located on the opposite side of the placed wedges).
Checking the clearance of the axle bearings
Turning the wheel slowly in two directions, check that the movement is smooth
and the wheel rotates without excessive resistance and jamming.
Turn the wheel so that it rotates very quickly, check that the bearing does not
make any unusual sounds.
Holding the wheel above and below, try to feel the clearance.
Repeat the checking procedure for the other wheels.
Place the tractor for straight travel.
The jack should be placed between the U-bolts (2) figure (5.1)
mounting the axle (1) to the lower frame (3), or as close as possible to
the spring mount. Recommended support points are marked with
arrows. The jack must be adjusted to the weight of the trailer.
A lever can be put under the wheel, resting the other end on the
ground.
