Cleaning the Sample Cone and the Skimmer Cone

Corrosive Acids. When handling the corrosive acids required to
perform the cleaning procedures described below, take the following
precautions.
• Wear protective clothing.
• Use acid resistant laboratory gloves and glasses.
• Make yourself aware of all safety procedures in case of spillage or
exposure to skin or eyes before commencing the cleaning.
The acid cleaning should take place in a fume hood.
To clean the cone
1. Place the cone in 2% nitric acid in an ultrasonic bath for
15 minutes.
2. Rinse thoroughly with deionized water.
3. Sonicate the cone for 5 minutes with deionized water.
4. Dry it carefully with a non-fiber shedding laboratory wipe or leave it
to air dry.
To insert the sample cone
1. Make sure that the sample cone gasket is in good condition, see
Figure
8-11. Replace it if required.
