Tuning Backup Performance
6.1.2

Tuning shared memory

If a buffer size is set, the shared memory size of the server must be set.
The following explanation uses an example in which the buffer size is set to 256 kilobytes,
the number of LT160 drives is set to 4, and the job concurrency level is set to 1.
1) Edit the /etc/system file to set the shared memory size.
Notes:
1.
2.
2) Reboot the server to update the shared memory size on the server.
6.2
Tuning VERITAS NetBackup (Windows NT 4.0/
Windows 2000)
In Windows NT 4.0/Windows 2000, the buffer size does not need to be changed because
it is optimized by NetBackup.
Note:
If the buffer size is changed, the performance level may drop. Be sure to use the default
buffer size for ordinary operation.
6.3

Tuning Legato NetWorker

This section explains how to tune the Legato NetWorker block size.
For best performance, a block size of 256 kilobytes or more is recommended. The
maximum size is one megabyte (the default block size is 64 kilobytes).
The block size of a library unit must agree with other units in the same system, and the
block size in a system must agree with the block size of other systems that exchange data.
If these restrictions do not apply, one megabyte is recommended from the viewpoint of
performance.
The following uses an example in which the block size is set to 256 kilobytes.
6-2
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax = 8388608
Set the shared memory size calculated from the formula (shared memory size (bytes)
= buffer size (bytes) × number of buffers (default: 8) × number of drives × MPX (job
concurrency level per drive).
If this value has already been set, add the value calculated above and set the total
value.
