30HP Tiller Handle Kit

The Yamaha tiller handle kit (optional for the
30HP, 3-cylinder) lets you steer your boat from
the stern.
N O T E :
The 30HP manually operated outboard
comes equipped with a tiller handle steering sys-
tem.

Installation
1. Remove the upper cowling, flywheel cover,
and carburetor air box from the motor.
2. It will be necessary to remove the three car-
buretor assemblies to install the neutral safe-
ty switch. Shut off the fuel supply, and dis-
connect the choke rod from the lower part of
the carburetor assembly. Detach the oil pump
link, and disconnect the fuel line at the fuel
filter.

C atch any fuel that may drain from the hose
( or carburetors when removed) in a suitable
container. D o not perform this operation near
an open flame, heater, or while smoking.
G asoline is highly flammable and can cause
serious injury to you or anything else in the
surrounding area if a fire or an explosion
occurs.
3. Remove the six bolts holding the carburetors
to the intake manifold, and carefully remove
the carburetors. The choke solenoid shaft will
pull out of the choke solenoid as the carbure-
tors are removed. If desired, the choke sole-
noid and shaft may both be removed as they
will be no longer used.
4. Install the neutral safety switch in its bracket
so, when the assembly is mounted, the button
on the switch faces towards the rear. Install
the switch and bracket on the bottom cowling
with the two 6mm bolts. Remove the control
cable cover from the front right corner of the
bottom cowling, and confirm the proper loca-
tion of the switch by operating the shift lever.
The switch button should be pressed by the
cam on the end of the shift lever only when
the lever is moved to neutral.
5. Remove the handle bracket, grommet, and
control face plate from the front of the motor.
6. Locate and install the new face plate on the
front panel.
7. Loosely install the tiller handle assembly,
inserting the throttle cables and shift rod
through the opening left by the grommet at
the left side of the face plate. Make sure the
rod and cables are in their proper channels in
the grommet, then insert the grommet.
8. Install the shift rod through the lower hole in
the shift lever, and secure it with a flat wash-
er and cotter pin. Tighten the tiller handle
bolts.
