Outboard Rigging Guide - 2001
701 Side Mount Remote Control
Installation
For smaller manual start motors, the 701 side
mount control is the perfect answer. It features a
forward/reverse lever and separate fast idle lever
without the electrical connections of the 703.
Preparation
1. Select a mounting location for the remote
control which offers ease of use from the
helm, and allows full movement of the con-
trol lever.
2. Choose an unobstructed path for the cables
that will allow them to be routed as straight as
possible with no sharp bends. Measure from
the control head to the shift and throttle con-
nections on the motor. Yamaha remote con-
trol cables are available in lengths from 6 feet
to 36 feet.
Installation of Remote Control Cables
1. Loosen the four screws and remove the back
plate.
2. Screw in the cable end about 11mm (0.43in)
over the threaded end of each remote control
cable, and secure it with the locknut. Use
Yamaha Marine Grease to coat the hole in the
end of each cable end.
WARNING
If the cable is not screwed in at least 8mm, the
cable joint could break. This could cause loss of
control and an accident.
3. Fit the groove around the outer shift control
cable (over the ridge and around the clamp).
Next, fit the cable end over the pin on the end
of the shift arm.
