Each airplane has a checklist for the preflight
inspection
which must be followed. USE THE CHECKLIST.
WE/GHT AND BALANCE
Maintaining center of gravity within the approved envelope
throughout the plannad flight is an important safety consid-
eration.
The airplane must be loaded so as not to exceed
the
weight
and center
ot
gravity (C.G.) limitations. Airplanes that are
loaded above the maximum takeoff or Ianding weight limita-
tions will have an overall lower level of performance com-
pared to
that
shown in the Performance section
ot
the Pilot's
Operating Handbook and FAA Approved Airplane Flight
Manual.
lt
loaded above maximum takeoff weight, takeoff
distance and the Ianding distance will be longer than that
shown in the Performance section; the stalling speed will be
higher, rate
ot
climb, the cruising speed, and the ranga
ot
the airplane at any level of tuel will all be lower than shown
in the Performance section.
lt an airplane is loaded so that the C.G. is forward of the
tor-
ward limit, it will require additional eontroi movements for
maneuvering the airplane with correspondingly higher eon-
troi forces.
The
pilot
may have difficufty during takeoff and
Ianding because
ot
the elevator eontroi limits.
lf an airplane is loaded aft of the aft C.G. limitation, the pilot
will experience a lower level of
stability.
Airplane character-
istics that indicate a lower stability level are; lower eontroi
forces, difficulty in trimming the airplane, lower eontroi forces
for maneuvering with attendant danger
ot
structural over-
load, decayed stall characteristics, and a lower level
ot
lateral-directional damping.
Ensure that all cargo and baggage is properly secured
betore takeoff. A sudden shift in balance at rotation can
cause controllability problems.
