INTRODUCTION

The MZ Electric Tow Tractor is a battery-powered, electric rear-wheel drive vehicle designed for
medium-duty towing. The tractor represents the arrival of a new generation of electric utility vehicles
capable of towing loads up to 45,000 pounds. An AC asynchronous drive motor is an integral part of
the rear axle, which eliminates the need for conventional interconnecting drive shafts.
An 80-Volt traction battery design has been incorporated into the overall chassis architecture. This
design provides ballast for a low center of gravity and drawbar weight, which enables the MZ to have
exceptional pulling power. The suspension has been specially designed to provide a smooth ride.
Special microcomputer-controlled circuitry enables the tractor to provide consistent pulling torque at
low or high speeds. The same logic controls allow for much more efficient power utilization.
Vehicle operation employs standard braking and accelerator pedals, steering and on/off switch. These
simple controls allow smooth operator transition from other fleet vehicles to the MZ. Safety and
convenience improve operator performance and reduce cost.
This manual covers the operation and maintenance of your MZ Electric Tow Tractor. Some special
considerations associated with battery care and effective charging practices are included. Refer to
Chapter 5 for additional instructions applicable to the powertrain.
