FRONT AXLE SPRING BUSHINGS REMOVAL/REPLACEMENT

This procedure is written with the assumption that both sets of bushings are to be changed. Brake
caliper assemblies do not have to be removed for this procedure, however care must be observed not
to drop the front axle further than is allowed by the flexible front brake hoses.
1.
Chock rear tires, jack front end of vehicle. Secure front with jackstands under front frame.
(Refer to jacking instructions in Chapter 2, Section 1, paragraph G..)
2.
Remove front tires.
3.
Beginning at one side, place hydraulic jack beneath front axle favoring the side to be serviced
first. Jack up axle only enough to relieve weight of axle off springs.
4.
Remove front and rear spring mount bolts and nuts. Lower jack just until spring loops clear
the spring mount brackets. Pay attention not to overstress flexible brake hose.
5.
Remove old bushings, replace with new bushings.
6.
Raise axle carefully, aligning spring loops into mounting brackets. Replace mounting
hardware and tighten securely.
7.
Repeat procedures for other side of steer axle. Replace tires and wheels when finished.
E.

TIE ROD ENDS

Grasp the sides of the wheel and shake it from side to side while observing the rod ends. If excessive
movement is observed in the rod connection ends, replace the connecting rod ends as follows:
1.
Disconnect the rod ends from the spindle arms, removing the cotter pins and retainer nuts.
2.
Remove the connecting rod and remove the rod end retainer clamps.
3.
Screw the new rod ends approximately 1/4 inch into each end of the rod.
