2.4.2 Working volume

Each drum is designed for a specific working volume range. The
minimum working volume and the rated working volume are listed in
the general mixing specifications in Chapter 4. In normal operation,
the actual working volumes should not exceed the indicated rated
working volumes.

2.4.3 Liquid transfer

The BPC is designed with thermoplastic tubing, quick connects and
tri-clamps for the purposes of adding to and dispensing from the
BPC. For closed-top mixing applications, a sterile environment can be
maintained as long as all connections are made in an aseptic manner.
To maintain the sterility of the mixing system, connect additional lines
(quick connects and tri-clamp) under a laminar flow hood or with a
sterile tubing welder.

2.4.4 Dispensing

CAUTION: The agitator should not be operated at volumes less
than the stated minimum volume or when the level of the liquid falls
below the top level of the impeller; doing so will cause splashing and
foaming of the remaining product.
With the exception of the 300 L BPC, all BPCs are equipped with a
drain line that allows for liquid removal by means of a peristaltic pump.
The drain is located at the bottom of the BPC, allowing for minimal
hold up volumes. Connect the bottom drain line using the provided
1.27 cm (1/2 in.) quick connect fitting. Be sure to turn off agitation
during draining when approaching the minimum working volume.

2.5 BPC loading

2.5.1 Open-top liner loading

Use the following steps to install an open-top BPC liner.
1. If it is not already there, place the drum on the dolly.
2. For ease of installation, move the drum two or three feet away
from the docking station.
3. A 50 L BPC may be used in a 100 L drum, if desired. To use this
configuration, ensure that the white plastic spacer is placed in the
bottom of the 100 L drum, under the conical insert (Figure 2.15).
