7.CollisionWarning
Ifthevehicleisapproachingthevehicledrivingaheadorapedestrianataverylowspeed,anacute
warningisnotissuedevenwhenthedistanceisverysmall.Thisintentionaldrivingsituationonly
triggerstheearlywarning.Thiswaytherearefewermeaninglessandannoyingacutewarningsissued
bythesystem.
Theacutewarningcannotbedeactivatedseparately.Thetimingoftheacutewarningalsocannotbe
adjusted.Iftheacutewarningisnottobeissued,the"collisionwarning"frontprotectivefunctionmust
bedeactivated.
Ifanacutewarningisissued,thisisindicatedtothedriverbyaredflashingvehiclesymbolorared
flashingpersonsymbolintheinstrumentcluster(KOMBI)orHead-UpDisplay.Inaddition,anacoustic
warningsignalissounded.
Theacutewarningforpedestriansisissuedwithinaspeedrangeofapproximately10 km/hto60 km/h.
Theacutewarningforvehiclesisissuedatspeedsaboveapproximately5 km/h.
Whentheacutewarningisissued,thebrakesystemisalsopreconditionedinordertoachievequicker
andsharperdeceleration.Withthesemeasuresthedriveralsoreceivesspecificsupportatthesame
timeasthewarninginordertobeabletorespondeffectively.
Theacutewarningdoesnotrelievethedriverofhisresponsibilitytoadaptthespeedanddrivingstyle
tothetrafficconditions.
7.2.4.Brakeintervention
Withthecamerabased,collisionwarningw/citycollisionmitigation(OEZN3includedwithOE5AS);
Ifthedrivernolongerhastheoptiontoavoidtheaccidentwithhisownresponse,automaticbrake
interventioniseffectedasalaststep.Thebrakeinterventioniseffectedatabrakeforceofabout4 m/
s²(camerabased)andcanhavetheeffectofavoidingacollisionuptoadifferentialspeedofabout
18 km/h.Athigherdifferentialspeedstheimpactspeedisreducedbyasmalleramount.Justlikethe
drivercansupporttheeffectofthesystem,healsohastheoptionofoverridingandthuscancelling
theautomaticpanicbrakingatanytimewithasteeringwheelmovement(avoidancemaneuver),by
acceleratingorwithasharpbrakeintervention.
Withthecameraandradarbased,collisionwarningsystem(includedwithOE5AT);Ifthedriverno
longerhastheoptiontoavoidtheaccidentwithhisownresponse,automaticbrakeinterventionis
effectedasalaststep.Thebrakeinterventioniseffectedatabrakeforceofabout8 m/s²(camera/radar
based)andcanhavetheeffectofavoidingacollisionuptoadifferentialspeed(delta)ofabout30 km/
h.
Therefore,bothsystemscanbringcartoastop,thedifferenceisthatyouaremorelikelytoseethis
happenina5ATcarthena5AScar.Thisiswhy5ASisreferredtoas"citycollisionMITIGATION"
becausethisisthemorelikelyusecaseasopposedto"AVOIDANCE"with5AT.
Thebrakeinterventioniseffectedforpedestriansinthespeedrangebetween10and60 km/handfor
vehiclesinthespeedrangebetween5and60 km/h.
Forabrakeinterventiontobepossible,theDynamicStabilityControl(DSC)mustbeswitchedon.
