18.4.Functionalprinciple
TheParkingManeuverAssistantfunctionfacilitatesmaneuveringintoparkingspacesthatareparallel
(parallelparking)andperpendicular(bayparking)totheroadway.Thesystemmeasurespotential
parkingspaceswhendrivingpastataspeedbelowapproximately35 km/hwithoutthesystemhaving
beenactivated.
Theparkingspacesaremeasuredbytwoadditionalultrasonicsensors,whichareintegratedintothe
frontwheelarch.ThesetwosensorsareconnectedtotheParkingManeuverAssistant(PMA)control
unit,whichalsoincorporatestheParkDistanceControlfunction.Thefunctionofthetwoultrasonic
sensorsissimilartothatoftheParkDistanceControlPDC.Ultrasonicpulsesaresentandecho
impulsesarereceived.
TwoadditionalultrasonicsensorsareinstalledintherearbumperoftheG12topreciselydetectthe
sizeofatransverseparkingspaceduringtheparkingmaneuver.Theadditionalultrasonicsensors
measurethedistancetodetectedobjects.
Ifaparkingspaceofasufficientlengthandwidthisfoundandthesystemisactivated,thedriveris
shownthespaceonthecentralinformationdisplay.
TheParkingManeuverAssistantfunctionthentakesoverthevehiclehandlingentirely,including
steering,brakingandgearselection.
Spacesthatdonothaveavehicleateithersidearealsorecognizedassuitableparkingspaces.This
makesitpossibletoparkbehindonlyoneobject.
Thedriverisstillresponsibleformonitoringthevehicleenvironmentandcaninterveneinthe
automaticparkingmaneuveratanytimeifrequiredduetothevehicleenvironment.When
searchingforaparkingspaceandwhenparking,allrelevantinformationispresentedtothedriver
inanintegrateddisplay;fromtheparkingspaceitselftothestatusoftheparkingassistantand
correspondinghandlinginstructionsthroughtodistancesfromotherobjects.
