Overview of Electrical Safety Testing

Regulatory
Regular electrical safety testing should be conducted by qualified personnel in accordance with DIN
Background
VDE 0751-1 "Recurrent test and test after repair of medical electrical equipment". It should include
the following items:
• Visual inspection (see page 86)
• PE resistance test (see page 87)
• Leakage current test (see page 88)
• Earth leakage current breaker test (see page 90)
• Functionality test (see page 91)
If electrical safety cannot reliably be ensured, the system must be labeled accordingly and the hos-
pital or clinic informed in writing about possible hazards.
Test Preconditions
Once installed, the ExacTrac system should not be disconnected from the mains power supply or
the potential equalization network.
In order to perform testing, the plastic housing that protects devices installed within the patient en-
vironment may need to be removed.
In addition, data cables and power cables may need to be disconnected from the device to be tested.
Reference Point
The required reference point for the PE resistance test and the leakage current test is the standard
potential equalization bar or star point ground of the treatment room.
The potential of this reference point is assumed to be equal to patient potential, as all other systems
or devices (e.g. LINAC) in the treatment room also use this point as a reference.
Example Measuring
Example measuring points for the PE resistance test (see page 87) are shown below. Further mea-

suring points can be defined as required.
