APPENDIX B
ADDRESSING MORE
THAN ONE DMA DEVICE
Your SLM804 Laser Printer communicates with the system through
the SLMC804 Controller and the DMA port (Hard Disk) on your
ST Computer: the system treats the laser printer as a DMA device.
Your ST Computer can access up to eight DMA devices. However,
to access more than two DMA devices, additional hardware and
software is required.
Each DMA device (laser printer or hard disk)
in
your system must
have a unique unit address (0 to 7). A laser printer's unit address
is determined by the printer's controller DIP (dual in-line package)
switch setting. You must set the DIP switch on at least one of the
controllers if either of the following is true:
• You have more than one Atari SLM804 Laser
Printer.
• You have an Atari hard disk drive assigned as Unit 7. (Hard
disks are set to Unit 0 at the factory.)
SeHing the DIP Switches
Use the following steps to set
the
DIP switches on an SLMC804
Controller.
Warning: During the procedure, it is essential that your system's
environment be clean, dust-free, and dry. It must not be wet, humid,
or extremely hot or cold.
1. Switch off all components in your computer system.
2. Disconnect the interface cables running from the controller to
the
printer and from the controller to the computer.
3. Gently turn the controller over, bottom-side up. With a Phillips
screwdriver, unscrew and remove the four screws, one at each
corner,
in
the bottom panel of the controller's housing.
4.
Carefully turn the controller right-side up again, making sure to
keep the
bottom panel in place with your hands as you turn it
over.
Remove the cover by lifting it straight up. Lay the cover
beside the
controller.
Warning: While its
top cover is
off,
keep all foreign objects (such
as
tools)
outside
the
controller.
