Main
A LDL - Assem bly Line Data Link - The pre-O BD-II com m unications link found on GM vehicles.
A rbitration ID (A rb ID) - The identifier portion of the CAN (Controller Area Network ) m essage.
CA RB - California Air Resources Board - Agency in California which sets em ission standards which relate to O BD.
CA N - Controller Area Network - A vehicle network which has m essages which contain an Arbitration ID (Arb ID) field, a DLC data length code field and an eight byte data field. The Arb ID can be 11 bits or 29 bits. This
specification was released by Bosch.
Class 2 - General Motors m essaging strategy based on the VPW part of the J1850 specification.
Ford SCP - Ford Motor Com pany m essaging strategy based on the PW M part of the J1850 specification
GMLA N - General Motors m essaging strategy using CAN. This strategy is planned to replace the Class 2 m essaging strategy (J1850).
IDB - Infotainm ent data bus - Different specifications related to in-vehicle inform ation and entertainm ent data buses. IDB-C is a specification that uses dual wire CAN.
ISO9141 - A UART based protocol which is allowed under O BD-II.
J1587 - Standard which defines m essaging pack ets for J1708 physical layer network s.
J1708 - Physical Layer specification and Protocol for using a RS485 style network . Used in truck and bus applications.
J1850 - Physical Layer and Protocol specification for north Am erican in-vehicle com m unications. It consists of two physical layers VPW and PW M which share sim ilar data form ats. This includes a 11 byte m essage with a CRC. In-
fram e responses are also available in the protocol.
J1939 - Specification for com m unications for Heavy Truck and Bus based on CAN m essages using a 29 bit Arb ID.
J1962 - Specification detailing the diagnostic connector found in North Am erican vehicles. This connector is also called the O DB-II connector and the ALDL connector.
J1979 - Specifications which detail O DB-II test m odes and data. This includes requesting values from the Vehicle such as RPM, Engine Load, Coolant Tem p, Vehicle Speed, Etc.
Keyword 2000 - An enhanced version of ISO 9141 which specifies m any diagnostics services.
LIN - Local Interconnect Network - A UART based network which consist of a m aster and m any slave nodes.
Messaging Strategy - This is a higher-level protocol which defines how the content of vehicle network m essages is used and when m essages are transm itted.
OBD - O n-board Diagnostics - Software inside the Vehicle which autom atically diagnoses the Vehicle. O BD-II specifies diagnostics services required by law in North Am erica.
Physical Layer - The electrical signaling portion of a protocol.
PWM - Pulse W idth Modulation - This type of electrical coding is used in the J1850 spec PW M protocol.
RS232 - PC com m unication port which can operate at speeds between 300 and 115k bits per second.
SA E - Society of Autom otive Engineers (www.sae.org)
UA RT - Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transm itter - A network protocol based on a UART found on m any m icrocontrollers.
USB - Universal Serial Bus - A 12 m egabits per second bus com m unication port.
VPW - Variable Pulse W idth - This type of electrical coding is used in the J1850 spec VPW protocol.
