Lift the heating element out of the heater tank. Lift the element straight up.
Heater gasket

Clean the heater tank. Remove any rust or solids that may have built up before
inserting the heater elements.

Replace the heater gasket if it is worn or cracked.

Reverse these steps to install the new heater element and reassemble the unit.
