10 Processing Data – Color Alignment
Much of the data described in this manual, particularly the model in the sample data, is a
combination of color photos and range data. SceneVision-3D provides tools for mapping color
images to range data. This process is called color alignment and is similar to range alignment.
However, unlike range alignment, the points chosen are not starting points for the function.
Therefore they must be chosen with greater care.
Color alignment requires range data (an RTPI file) and associated images that were captured
with a calibrated camera. The camera that ships with the DeltaSphere is calibrated – but
additional cameras can be calibrated. Please contact 3rdTech for additional information.

10.1 Procedure

This section will guide you through the steps of color alignment. You may want to work
through this with the sample data, or you can read it in preparation for working with your own
data.

10.1.1 Create or Load a Scene

You might begin by creating a scene as described in section 3.4 – by loading an entire directory
of files from a scan session. If you would like to use our sample data, we suggest not loading the
scene but rather creating a new scene with just the 3 files needed for this exercise.

10.1.2 The Color Align Tab

Select the Color Align tab to display a new toolbar of functions specific to this operation.
Initially, the 1:New button will be enabled, as it is the first of 4 required steps for aligning color.
(There are some additional optional steps.)
1:New
Select the 1:New button. This indicates that you are about to begin a color alignment session –
usually associated with aligning color to a single range data file. After selecting the button

Note: The functions in this section are only provided with color systems. Please
contact 3rdTech if you would like additional information about color.
Open File – with v1.rtpi found in the v1 directory (you'll be prompted to create a
scene)
Insert Files – with the two image files that begin with 'im' found in the v1\photos
directory
Note: Before beginning the color alignment, we recommend creating a copy of
the range file you will be coloring. Select the file (in this case, v1.rtpi) in the
scene tree and select Save File As in the File menu. Our convention is to append
'_color' to the name – save this file as v1_color.rtpi. In this way, the color range
file you create can be saved without changing the original range file.
