6.1.4 Acquire Images

Once range data has been scanned with the laser rangefinder, and all the color images have been
acquired with the digital camera, the tripod can be moved to a new position.

6.1.5 Manual Color

In addition to capturing color images in the manner described above, one can capture images
with the camera either hand held or on a tripod – not mounted to the DeltaSphere. (A pan-tilt
tripod head is helpful for manual pictures.) This can be useful in capturing images that are
outside of the field of view of the standard scan – perhaps a close-up photo of a part of the
scene. These images typically will not be taken from the same viewpoint as the range data.

To acquire all images from this tripod location, select the Auto Acq. tab. This enables the
Start button.
Click on the Start button and the Auto Acquire popup window will appear as in the figure
below. In this window you specify the parameters used for naming the image files and turn
bracketing on or off. These are discussed in Section 6.2. Select Start in this window to
capture the images associated with these parameters. The DeltaSphere will rotate to its
starting position, acquire images, move to the next position, and repeat until the entire
horizontal field-of-view is covered.
Now you may need to reposition the camera to aim high or low.Then repeat the Auto
Acquire operation. Typically, but not always, a scan will have high and low images from
each tripod location.
Save the scene. (Note that all the range data and images are saved in files even if you don't
save the scene.)
Note: Typically you do not need to remove the camera during scanning for range,
though with the camera mounted the vertical view of the laser is limited to
approximately 75° (above horizontal). This leaves a 'hole' in the overhead view
– but one that usually can be filled in from adjacent scans.
