    3D points can be used for measuring the area or objects scanned, and for producing 3D, computer graphics models. With the color option, the DeltaSphere-3000 can also provide a full color value for each point as well as high-resolution texture maps.

    Scanning Section 4 is a guide to scanning with the DeltaSphere and SceneVision. All users should read this section before operating the DeltaSphere-3000. DeltaSphere Color Option Section 5 describes the DeltaSphere color option set up. Section 6 is a guide to range and color capture with the DeltaSphere and SceneVision.

  • Page 6: Deltasphere-3000 Setup

    12-volt DC cable for an automobile cigarette lighter or equivalent. The DeltaSphere-3000 color option includes a professional color digital camera and lens, a special camera mount and additional software. The infrared version includes one pair of laser safety glasses.

  • Page 7: Camera Tripod Installation

    The quick release camera mount provided is recommended for use with a photographer’s tripod. We recommend a heavy-duty tripod with a 3/8-16 mounting screw and a ‘geared column’. Figure 2 shows the base of the DeltaSphere-3000 as well as the two parts of the quick-release camera mount.

Figure 4 Quick-release mount base plate on tripod To attach the DeltaSphere-3000 to the tripod, ‘open’ the receiver mount by moving the release lever and safety lever as described in the quick mount instructions provided. Holding the DeltaSphere securely by both handles, place the base of the DeltaSphere in the mount as shown in Figure 5, with two sides of the hexagonal plate securely under the receiver’s ‘dovetail sides’...

    The DeltaSphere-3000 can be mounted directly onto a surveyor’s tripod, or onto a Tribrach adaptor, using the 5/8-11 mounting hole on the base plate. Once the Tribrach adaptor is mounted on the DeltaSphere-3000, it can be mounted on a standard Tribrach.

    2.2.3 Tripod Accessories When controlling the DeltaSphere-3000 from a laptop, it is helpful to mount the laptop on the tripod. (See Figure 7) This shortens the cables needed for both the Ethernet and 1394 connections, and also makes it easier to move the system to different positions.

    2.3 Installing DeltaSphere Software SceneVision-3D is the DeltaSphere’s software application. It serves many functions. It is the interface to the DeltaSphere-3000 during the scanning process and provides communication with the server software (pre-installed and running on the DeltaSphere-3000 scanner), device control, and data acquisition and display. With the color option, it also provides camera control and image acquisition.

    Figure 14). You will also need to connect the power pack to the power connection (2), plug in the power pack, and turn the power switch (3) on the DeltaSphere-3000 to on. Some systems also have a key that must be inserted and turned to on.

    The three principal kinds of data are described below. Range Data Range data is the raw data produced by the DeltaSphere-3000 Scanner. It consists of a long list of 3D points – typically millions of points. These points are described by their position when scanned and by the intensity of the laser’s reflection.

    A scene file organizes all of the different data associated with a scanned scene. The scene might be a single scan of an object or room, multiple scans of an object or room, or DeltaSphere-3000 3D Scene Digitizer 9/23/05...

    – perhaps by two different users. 3.2.1 Creating Scene Files from a Scan Session Scanning a scene with the DeltaSphere-3000 can produce a large number of files. SceneVision provides a standard organization scheme so that all files are produced with a logical naming scheme and are stored with a logical file organization.

    SceneVision window. Note: If you try to open an image file, the program will assign to this photo the default ‘camera configuration file’. DeltaSphere-3000 cameras are calibrated and have associated configuration files (.cfg). This enables the mapping of photos to the range data.

    4 Basic Scanning Operation This section describes scanning with the DeltaSphere-3000 scanner. It is important to read the Operating Guidelines below before operating the system. 4.1 Operating Guidelines Use protective eyewear whenever there is a risk of being exposed to the output beam of the DeltaSphere-3000 or DeltaSphere-3000IR.

    Windows Explorer. Connect to the DeltaSphere You are now ready to connect to the DeltaSphere-3000 scanner. Click on the Scan tab and new controls will appear along the bottom of the window, as shown in Figure 20, divided into three sections.

    These will be explained individually in the sections that follow. The DeltaSphere-3000 scans a vertical array of points, then rotates about the vertical axis for the next vertical array, repeating this process until the specified field of view has been covered.

  • Page 30: Using The Pan Controls

    With the Pan controls, you can quickly and easily aim the scanner and specify the horizontal field-of-view of the DeltaSphere-3000. To use the Pan controls, you must first connect to the DeltaSphere-3000 as described at the beginning of this section. This enables the controls shown in Figure 21.

    DeltaSphere color option. The DeltaSphere-3000 acquires a large number of points. The client PC receives data over the network from the DeltaSphere-3000 and immediately saves it to disk. During a scan a progress bar, to the right of the Start button, shows what percentage of the scan is complete.

  • Page 33: Deltasphere Color Setup

    Note: This section describes the camera mount that began shipping in April, 2004. Prior versions used a different mount. The camera mount has two pieces: a receiver that permanently mounts to the DeltaSphere-3000, and a camera bracket that slides into the receiver and attaches to the camera’s tripod mount.
  • Page 34 Attach the Camera Mount The receiver part of the mount attaches to the back of the DeltaSphere-3000 as shown in Figure 24. If you ordered the color option with your DeltaSphere-3000, it will have been attached at the factory. If not, lay the DeltaSphere down on its side (leg-side down). Place the two spacers in the two spaces in the DeltaSphere as show in Figure 24.

    The DeltaSphere-3000 Color Option software is embedded in SceneVision software. This software provides camera control, image acquisition, and color-mapping functions. If you purchased the color option at the same time as your DeltaSphere-3000, it is already installed. If not, follow the installation instructions that came with your DeltaSphere-3000 Color Option shipment.

    You might need to turn the camera off and on again to make the connection. Click on the Settings button. A camera controls popup window will appear as in Figure 29.     Image Size – There are four image size choices, ranging from 12 Mpixel (4256 x 2848) to 1.3 Mpixel (1440 x 960). We recommend using one of the two middle settings. DeltaSphere-3000 3D Scene Digitizer 9/23/05...

    Select the Start button to open the Auto Acquire popup window as shown in Figure 31. This displays several parameters. Scan Name – If these pictures correspond to a laser scan you’ve already done, select that name from the list. Otherwise, provide a new name for this series of images.     SceneVision-3D includes a high-performance 3D model viewer. Its actual performance will depend on the size of your model and the performance of your PC graphics card. (For recommendations on graphics cards please contact 3rdTech.) Note: For a sample file, double click on clue.wrl in the clue scene tree.

    After you’ve specified your files, the Create Correspondence Point button ( ) is automatically selected. You will now select corresponding points in each window to begin the alignment.     Color alignment requires range data (an RTPI file) and associated images that were captured with a calibrated camera. The camera that ships with the DeltaSphere is calibrated – but additional cameras can be calibrated. Please contact 3rdTech for additional information. 10.1 Procedure This section will guide you through the steps of color alignment.

Therefore, produce accurate mappings, correspondence points should be selected very carefully by ‘zooming in’ to the data as necessary.
