• With a manual transmission,
push the clutch pedal to the
floor and put the transmission
in neutral. The engine won't
start if the clutch pedal is not
all the way down.
Make sure the parking brake is
applied before starting the
engine.
Turn your ignition key to START.
Do not push the accelerator pedal.
Let go of the key when the engine
starts. The idle speed will go down
as the engine gets warm.
Do not race the engine immedi-
ately after starting.
Allow enough time for the engine
to warm up and deliver oil to the
various parts of the engine requir-
ing lubrication.
Computer Controlled Cranking
System
This feature helps start the engine
and protects components. If the
key is turned to the START posi-
tion and released, the engine will
continue to crank for a few
seconds or until the vehicle starts.
If the engine does not start and the
key is held in START, the system
will stop cranking the engine after
15 seconds to prevent starter
motor gear damage.
Turn the ignition to the ACC or
LOCK position to stop cranking
and turn the engine off.
If the engine is already running,
this system prevents further crank-
ing.

Engine Starting Problems

NOTICE
Holding your key in START
immediately after cranking has
ended can overheat and
damage the starter motor and
drain your battery.
Wait about 15 seconds
between each try to help avoid
draining your battery or
damaging your starter.
