Seats and Restraints
Your vehicle is equipped with two
air bags that may inflate from the
center of the steering wheel and
from the passenger side of the
instrument panel during a moder-
ate to severe frontal or near-frontal
collision.
These are dual-stage frontal air
bags which adjust the amount of
restraint according to crash severi-
ty. For moderate frontal impacts,
the air bags inflate at a level less
than full deployment. For more
severe frontal impacts, full deploy-
ment occurs.
Vehicles equipped with dual-stage
air bags also have electronic fron-
tal sensors which help the system
distinguish between a moderate
and more severe frontal impact.
. . . 162
Whether the air bags should or will
deploy is not based on vehicle
speed. It is based largely on what
you hit, the direction of impact,
how quickly the vehicle slows
down and on specific vehicle
design. Variations of these factors
trigger air bag deployment at
varying crash speeds.
CAUTION
The path of an inflating air bag
must be kept clear of any
objects at all times.
In a crash, if an object is in the
path of an inflating air bag, the
air bag might force the object
toward a person. This could
result in severe injury or even
death.
Secure objects away from the
area in which an airbag would
inflate.
Your vehicle is also equipped with
two roof-mounted side impact air
bags that may inflate during a
moderate to severe side collision
or a vehicle rollover to protect the
driver, the front passenger and the
two passengers directly behind
them.
Both roof-mounted side impact air
bags are designed to inflate when
either side of the vehicle is struck
during a side collision.
