Off-Road Driving Basics

Off-road driving can be great fun,
but it does have some definite
hazards. The greatest of these is the
terrain itself.
Off-road driving involves some
special skills, so it's important to
review off-road driving information
before you go off-roading.
LOADING YOUR VEHICLE FOR
OFF-ROAD DRIVING
There are some important things to
remember about how to load your
vehicle.
• The heaviest things should be on
the load floor and forward of
your rear axle. Put heavier items
as far forward as you can.
Do not load items in the front
seat area.
• Be sure the load is secured prop-
erly, so driving on the off-road
terrain doesn't toss things
around.
Note: Heavy loads on the roof raise the
vehicle's center of gravity, making it
more likely to roll over.
PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE
HIGH MOBILITY
CHARACTERISTICS
Design specifications of the H2,
depending on suspension packages,
include the following:
• a ground clearance of 25 cm (9.9
inches) with a low center of grav-
ity
• a break-over angle of 23.5°
• an approach angle of 39.8°
• a departure angle of 37.1°
Your vehicle was designed to handle
climbing a 60% (31°) slope at a
speed of 9.7 km/h while fully loaded
and on a high friction surface. The
vehicle is expected to traverse this
grade only for short durations.
Never stop and idle or park the
vehicle on this grade.
The vehicle was also designed to
traverse a 40% (22°) side slope at a
speed of 9.7 km/h while fully loaded
and on a high friction surface.
The vehicle can also climb a 40.6 cm
vertical step. Step climbing is best
done by approaching the step at an
angle, rather than straight on.
Resetting the Engine Oil
Life System
The Oil Life System calculates engine
oil life based on vehicle use and
displays the following Driver Informa-
tion Center message when it is time to
change the engine oil and filter:
• CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON
(change engine oil soon)
After you change the oil, you need to
reset the system.
To reset the system, do the following:
1. Turn the ignition on but do not
start the engine.
2. Press the Driver Information
Center
(Vehicle Informa-
tion) button repeatedly to select
the OIL LIFE REMAINING (oil
life remaining) display.
3. Press and hold the Driver Infor-
mation Center
(Set/Reset)
button for five seconds.
When the system is reset, the
display should read 100%.
4. Turn off the ignition.
The oil life monitor should only be
reset after an oil change.
