Phase Locking to an External Signal

The phase-lock feature locks the Calibrator main output signal in phase with an external
signal (1 V rms to 10 V rms at 10 Hz to 1.2 MHz) applied to the rear panel PHASE
LOCK IN BNC connector. This feature can be used with ac volts, wideband voltage, or
current outputs, and combine it with variable phase output. The phase lock control is in
the window with the phase output controls. To lock onto an external signal:
1. With the external signal source turned off, connect a coaxial cable between the
external signal source and the rear panel PHASE LOCK IN BNC connector.
When PHASE LOCK IN is used, make sure the phase lock source is floating
relative to the Calibrator output. Ground loops that can occur if the two
devices are not isolated can cause amplitude errors in the Calibrator
output. These errors may be particularly significant in the millivolt ranges.
2. Set an ac voltage or current output as described under "AC Voltage Output" or "AC
Current Output".
3. Turn on the external signal source.
4. Set the Calibrator frequency to within 2 % of the external source frequency.
5. Touch the + icon on the right of the display above the bottom row of selections to
expose the phase controls.
