VTY (Virtual Telnet Type) Commands
When using the Telnet Protocol to access a router, the user does it over a virtual terminal called
VTY session. The application software supports up to five virtual terminal sessions (numbered
VTY 1–5, inclusive) running on a router at the same time.

lists the VTY session commands.
To filter Telnet connections to the switch, proceed as follows:
1. Create a named access list with the permitted/denied IP addresses.

Accessing VTY Configuration Mode
The line vty command, in Global Configuration mode, accesses VTY (Virtual Telnet Type)
Configuration mode.
The VTY mode enables the user to control the VTY connection to the switch.
The prompt-line device-name(config-vty)# that follows the command indicates that VTY
Configuration mode has been entered.

device-name(config)#line vty
device-name(config-vty)#
Setting the VTY Connection Timeout
The exec-timeout command, in VTY Configuration mode, sets the VTY connection timeout value.
The no form of this command sets timeout value to be unlimited.
The device logs out when the connection timeout time expires.
If the command is configured without arguments it will display the current timeout value.
By default, the timeout value is 10 minutes. A timeout value of zero disables timeout-
disconnection (equivalent to unlimited).
