Saving and Displaying the Configuration

When the router is operating, the configuration information is located in two places: (1) the default
configuration in NVRAM, and (2) the running memory in RAM.
The default configuration is permanently available while NVRAM stores the information, even
when the power is shut down. The default configuration is saved by using the write memory
command.
It is important to save the current configuration in the NVRAM after each configuration
change.
The current information is lost if the system power is shut down. The current configuration
contains all non-default configuration information.
The user can display the configuration information and ensure that it is complete and correct. If it
is not, the user can verify the filename and repeat the preceding steps to retrieve the correct file, or
can modify the existing configuration.
Table 12
lists the commands to save and delete the configuration on the switch.
Table 12: Saving and Deleting the Configuration Commands
Command
write erase
write memory
Restoring the Configuration to the Factory Default Values
The write erase command, in Privileged (Enable) mode, erases the current configuration of the
switch stored in the NVRAM of the switch. The start-up configuration file is set to factory default
values.
This command is similar to reload to-defaults, except that it does not restart the switch.
Command Syntax
device-name#write erase
Saving the Switch Configuration
The write command, in Privileged (Enable) mode, stores the switch current configuration on the
NVRAM. The configuration will be saved and loaded each time power to the unit is turned on.
Both write and write memory commands have the same functionality.
The command is equivalent to the copy running-config startup-config command.
Command Syntax
device-name#write [memory]
