Installing Spares

Your Hitachi Simple Modular Storage 100 contains two compartments that
can accommodate spare drives. The array's hot-swappable feature enables
you to add the drives without shutting down or turning off your Hitachi
Simple Modular Storage 100.
To install a spare drive, you need:
A new drive that meets the requirements in step 2 below.
A server connected to the management port of your Hitachi Simple
Modular Storage 100.

Before You Begin

Before you begin, observe the following guidelines:
The new drive(s) must be the same type (SATA or SAS) as the others in
your Hitachi Simple Modular Storage 100.
The new drive(s) must have the same capacity as the other drives in
your Hitachi Simple Modular Storage 100.
Wear a wrist strap attached to chassis ground when performing this
procedure.

Checking for Defective Drives

Before installing a spare drive, use Storage Navigator 2 to see whether any
of the other drives are defective.
1. Start a Web browser and launch Storage Navigator 2.
2. Log in to Storage Navigator 2:
http://<IP address of management console PC>:23015/
StorageNavigatorModular/
3. In the Explorer pane and select Resources > Arrays.
4. If a Warning does not appear in the Status column, skip to
the Spare Drives on page
Verify that the serial number shown in the Serial No. column
matches the one on your array (see
In the Array Name column, click the name of the array that has
the Warning status.
