Understanding Messaging Types

Your Smartphone supports e-mail messaging, SMS messaging, and instant messaging. You can
work with e-mail and SMS messages from Inbox, and use instant messaging features from MSN
Messenger.
N O T E
Your Smartphone also supports the MMS function. For more information, see Chapter 10.

E-mail Messaging

There are two ways to send and receive e-mail messages with the Smartphone:
By synchronizing Inbox with Microsoft® Outlook® on your desktop computer or your
Microsoft® Exchange server
By connecting to a POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail server to send and receive Internet e-mail
messages

SMS Messaging

You can send and receive SMS messages up to 160 characters in size over the Smartphone network
(this limitation does not apply in Europe). If an SMS message is longer, it will automatically be sent
in chunks as several small SMS messages, and will then be unified as one SMS message after all of
the small SMS messages have been received. If the receiver's phone does not support this function,
the SMS message will be separated into several messages and appear on the receiver's phone as
multiple messages.
The advantages of SMS messages include the following:
SMS messages are sent instantly.
SMS messages can be sent or received at any time, including during a voice or data call.
Most mobile phones support SMS, so most recipients can read SMS messages that you send.
N O T E
You cannot synchronize SMS messages with your desktop computer, and you cannot use SMS
messages to send or receive attachments or voice notes.

Instant Messaging

You can use MSN® Messenger on the Smartphone to send and receive instant messages. MSN
Messenger on the Smartphone provides the same chat environment as MSN Messenger on your
desktop computer. For example, you can chat with a single MSN Messenger contact, or with
several contacts at once. You can switch between active chats, block contacts, and configure
display settings, such as your name and current status (Away, Online, and so on).
