PPTP Tunneling

PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) allows a PPP connection to be tunneled
through an IP network. To use "PPTP Tunneling" mode under the "CONFIG"
menu, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) adapter should be installed on the PC
connected to the modem that will be using the VPN connection prior to
configuring the SMC70032AE modem.
The PPP connection is set up between the PC connected to the modem and the
PPP server on the CO or Internet side. The PC and the SMC7032AE modem use
PPTP in order to "tunnel" a PPP link through a separate IP network running over
Ethernet.
In the "PPTP Tunneling" mode, the values of the LAN IP and the subnet mask
need to be inserted in order to allow PPTP Tunneling Access between the PC and
modem.
To properly configure the SMC70032AE for PPTP Tunneling, your ISP must
provide you with the correct value of the VPI (Virtual Path Identifier), ranging
from 0 to 4095, and the VCI (Virtual Channel Identifier), ranging from 1 to
65355.
Once these settings are configured and saved, the modem should connect to the
service provider's DSLAM and you can continue by configuring the PC.
The PC's NIC must be configured with an IP address on the same subnet as the
modem and use the modem's LAN IP address as its gateway IP address. An
example of the proper settings follows:
[PC Setup]
IP Address = 192.168.1.2
Gateway IP = 192.168.1.1
Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0
To create a VPN connection you must now configure the client software, setting
the VPN server address and your user name and password. Microsoft's "Dial-Up
Networking" can also be configured to act as a VPN client once you have
installed the "Microsoft VPN Adapter" under the Network control panel. The next
few pages use the combination of Dial-Up Networking with the Microsoft VPN
Adapter as a step-by-step example of setting up a VPN client on your PC.
