Configuring User and Group Mapping

Understanding User and Group Mapping

This functionality allows you to map Windows users/groups, who use the Server
Message Block protocol/Common Internet File System protocol (SMB/CIFS), to
UNIX users/groups, who use the Network File System protocol (NFS):
Note:
the Windows Security screen. User or group mapping using names is most useful when
NIS is enabled.
The NAS server maintains a mapping of users/groups between the two protocols.
If a Windows user/group is not mapped to an existing UNIX user/group ID, then
when the Windows user/group accesses the NAS server for the first time, a new
UNIX user/group ID is generated and the Windows user/group is mapped to it.
For user mappings to work correctly, the mapping needs to happen prior to the
client attaching to the NAS 8000. If the client is currently attached and the
mapping then takes place, the client must be rebooted to update the connection
information and save any information to the NAS server with the correct owner.
Mapping users/groups improves:
SMB/CIFS, the Windows protocol for sharing files, lets client applications
read and write to files. CIFS is a standard protocol that lets programs request
files and services on remote computers over the internet. CIFS uses the
client/server programming model. A client program makes a request of a
server program (usually running on another computer) for access to a file or to
pass a message to a program that runs on the server computer. The server
takes the requested action and returns a response.
NFS, the UNIX protocol for sharing files, is a client/server application that
lets a user view and optionally store and update files on a remote computer as
though they were on the user's own computer.
User or group mapping is available only when you select user-level security on
