3-110 Administering Basic Telephones
The MERLIN II system may include basic telephones
installed in the office or at remote locations. A basic
telephone is any single line telephone set (a zero button
set such as the 7102A), any rotary telephone (a 500 set), or
any Touch-Tone telephone (a 2500 set). A basic
telephone can be connected to the system through one of
these devices:
A Basic Telephone Module in the control unit
An Off-Premises Telephone Interface (OPTI)
The OPTI is limited in use to stations with
NOTE:
2-digit intercom numbers.
An Off-Premises Range Extender (OPRE)
As this document went to press, the OPRE

was not yet available.
A Basic Telephone and Modem Interface (BTMI)
A Basic Telephone and Modem Interface 2 (BTMI-2)
These devices are described in Section 1, "System
Description."
Basic telephones at remote locations must be
NOTE:
connected through an OPTI. An OPTI is
compatible with Touch-Tone basic telephones
only.
Users with basic telephones connected to Basic Telephone
Modules use dialing codes and switchhook signals to
access most system features. A few operations, such as
using a Night Service password, aren't available to them.
To administer a basic telephone connected to a Basic
Telephone Module, you perform the same general
procedures that you use to administer the MERLIN II
system voice terminals. However, because basic
telephones are used somewhat differently than voice
terminals, keep these points in mind:
