Reliability, availability, and serviceability features

Three important features in server design are reliability, availability, and
serviceability (RAS). These RAS features are designed to help you protect the
integrity of the data stored on your blade server; help ensure that your blade server
is available when you want to use it; and, in the event of a failure, help you easily
diagnose and repair the failure with minimal inconvenience.
The following is a list of some of the RAS features that your blade server supports:
v Automatic error retry or recovery
v Automatic server restart
v Built-in monitoring for temperature, voltage, and hard disk drives
v Customer-upgradeable system firmware code
v Customer support center 24 hours per day, 5 days a week (Monday through
v Diagnostic support of Ethernet controller ports
v Error codes and messages
v ECC protection on the Level 2 (L2) cache
v ECC memory
v Light path diagnostics
v Power-on self-test (POST)
v Predictive Failure Analysis (PFA) alerts
v Service processor that communicates with the BladeCenter management module
v SDRAM with serial presence detect (SPD) and vital product data (VPD)
v System error logging
v VPD (includes information stored in nonvolatile memory for easier remote
v Wake on LAN capability
2. Service availability will vary by country. Response time will vary depending on the number and nature of incoming calls.
Your blade server supports Serial Over LAN (SOL) technology, which provides
advanced remote management capability. It provides the ability to redirect server
serial data over a LAN without the use of serial concentrators. It also eliminates
the need for serial cabling by internally rerouting serial packets over the LAN.
The SOL feature is accessed through the management-module command-line
interface. The SOL feature does not require any special client software because
it is designed to work with existing standard Telnet consoles. For more
information, see the IBM BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Serial Over LAN Setup
Guide and BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Management Module Command-Line
Interface Reference Guide.
