Chapter 5. Configuration requirements for the blade server

This chapter contains the configuration tasks that you must perform so that you can
run Serial Over LAN (SOL) sessions on the blade server and use the IBM
BladeCenter management-module command-line interface. This chapter also
describes other configuration requirements for the blade server.
SOL provides a means to manage servers remotely by using a command-line
interface (CLI) over a Telnet or Secure Shell (SSH) connection. SOL is required to
manage servers that do not have KVM support, such as the JS20 Type 8842 blade
server.
SOL provides console redirection for both BIOS and the blade server operating
system. The SOL feature redirects server serial-connection data over a LAN without
the need for special cabling. The SOL connection enables blade servers to be
managed from any remote location with Internet access. The advantages of SOL
include:
v Remote administration without keyboard, video, or mouse (headless servers)
v Reduced cabling and no need for a serial concentrator
v Standard Telnet interface that eliminates the need for special client software
After you install the blade server in the BladeCenter unit, the blade server is
automatically configured. The Broadcom Ethernet controller device driver is installed
after you install the operating system. The blade server is automatically
reconfigured after you install software or hardware. IBM will periodically make
firmware updates available for the blade server. Before you continue, you can make
sure that the blade server has the latest version of firmware code. For additional
information, see "Updating the firmware code for the blade server and the service
processor" on page 40.
Since the firmware code in the blade server uses auto-configuration, additional
blade-server configuration programs are not required for the blade server. However,
if you have attached other devices to the blade server or the BladeCenter unit, you
must configure those devices as described in the applicable documentation that
comes with those devices or the BladeCenter unit. You do not have to set any
passwords to use the blade server. If you change the battery or replace the
system-board assembly, you must reset the date and time through your operating
system.
For information about setting up your network configuration for remote
management, see the IBM BladeCenter Planning and Installation Guide or the IBM
BladeCenter T Planning and Installation Guide located at http://www.ibm.com/
support on the World Wide Web.
Complete the following steps to locate the most recent version of BladeCenter
documentation, including the IBM BladeCenter Planning and Installation Guide or
the IBM BladeCenter T Planning and Installation Guide:
1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/support.
2. In the Learn section, click Publications.
3. On the "Publications" page, in the Brand field, select Servers.
